TI licenses ARM Cortex A series Eagle next-generation processor

ARM have announced Texas Instruments to be the first licensee for their new next generation ARM Cortex A series, code name Eagle, processors.

TI also proudly announced, through a press release, that it was the “first company to partner with ARM in the conception and definition of the next-generation Eagle ARM Cortex A series processor core, which is to be announced later this year”. TI also mentioned that they aim to “raise the bar in high-performance, power-efficient computing with upcoming OMAP platform solutions intended to radically transform devices while enriching the mobile lifestyle.”

TI and ARM go back a long way and have a 15 year history together, during which time TI has shipped around 250 million OMAP processors which contain the ARM core. More details at TI’s Mobile Momentum blog post.

And just so you don’t get too excited about the possibilities of having your next tablet PC or Smartphone run on the ARM Eagle based  processor, the Eagle has not landed yet. TI is expected to ship the first batch of processors based on the ARM Eagle not before 2012.
