Engadget reports that Sony Ericsson is apparently developing an Android 3.0 Gingerbread based gaming platform, on a smartphone that is somewhat a cross between a PSP Go and a Samsung Captivate (the AT&T variant of the Galaxy S).
Android has never really considered a Gaming platform, and even the iPhone has outdone the Android on games, however, all that could change with the launch of Android ver 3.0 Gingerbread, and Sony Ericsson that is still making phones based on the Android 1.6 OS is likely to make it happen.
Engadget finds through a trusted source that SE is already in the later stages of planning and is working along with Google in developing this brand new Gaming platform, device, and the eco-system.
The device itself is expected to be a cross between the PSP Go and the Samsung Captivate – a 3.7″ to a 4.1″ WVGA or higher resolution screen, a 5 MP camera, a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, a landscape slider with gaming controls instead of a QWERTY keypad. The phone is also expected to be mostly black with some silver accents, and branded as an Xperia or a Playstation device or maybe both.
On the Software and the OS side, it will be Android 3.0 Gingerbread, with a custom skin for the phone. There will also be a sperate section in the Android Market specifically for Games. This will initially be accessible only from this device, but later opened up to other devices meeting specifications on button layout etc.,. The Games are also expected to be hardcore 3D with titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, God of War, and Little Big Planet being possibilities.
Now for the most interesting part – the Phone, and the gaming ecosystem, could all launch as early as October this year. Keep an eye out on Tablets Unleashed for more on this ..
