The WSJ has a lengthy post on the South Korean giant, LG’s plan for the Smartphone, and Tablet PC market. LG has been late to the Smartphone game, and finished the second quarter with a minuscule 1.2 % market share, according to Gartner. However, LG Electronics is making amends and plans a slew of Smartphone launches under the Optimus umbrella.
There are also plans to launch a Tablet PC globally by Q4 this year, under the Optimus line, explained Chang Ma, VP Marketing, for LG’s mobile devices unit. LG’s foray into the tablet space will be with a tablet device running the Android OS, and differentiate itself from the other Tablets by focusing on the ability to create content, rather than simply display it, Mr. Ma said in an interview.
The tablet will include content focused on creation such as writing documents, editing video and creating programs. It will also have “high-end features and new benefits,” many of which will focus on productivity. Mr. Ma said that the iPad is a great device, but he doesn’t do much work on it. “Our tablet will be better than the iPad. It’s going to be surprisingly productive.”
The U.S. is going to be a key market for the tablet device, however he declined to comment on whether a wireless carrier would be involved with the distribution.
