American Mobile Internet usage pattern

How do Americans spend their time on the internet? – “They prefer to email while on the move, and social networking is the choice when at home”, is what Neilson found in their research on the american internet usage patterns.

When on their Home computers, Americans can’t seem to be drawn away from their Social networking, with 23% of their online time being spend on social networking sites and blogs. Online gaming and emails were the second and third preferences, with 10% and 8% of their online time being spent on these activities.

However, the american internet usage pattern, when on the move, was very different. The majority of the men (and women) on the move seem to prefer to stick to their emails, with 42% of their time being spent on emails. This may follow from the fact that Blackberry still retains a 35% of the US smartphone market share, and what would expect a Blackberry user to do!!

However, with a majority of the Blackberry types planning a shift to Android or iPhone, we could see a shift in the mobile internet usage patterns too. Only time will tell.

They have made one other interesting observation – 34% of the american population’s time spent on the internet has been categorized under “Other” activities. Wonder what these “other” activities could be!!
