RIM buys the “BlackPad.com” domain name

Mobilecrunch reports that RIM, the manufacturer of the popular Blackberry phones, has now registered the BlackPad.com domain name. They did an old fashioned WHOIS lookup on the domain name, and found that RIM has purchased the domain earlier this month.

They also say “The domain swapped hands at least once before, and has been squatted by one person or another since January of 2002. I’m not able to find any trademarks for the “BlackPad” name, so it seems unlikely that RIM could have squeezed it out of the previous owner’s hands without a bit of cash”.

So is that going to be the name of the upcoming Blackberry tablet from RIM? Not very likely would be my guess. RIM seems to have decided against the free privacy protect option available along with any domain registration. Also, RIM have not officially announced the device yet.

So RIM wants you to know they own the domain but have not officially announced the device. Doesn’t look very likely that they will call their tablet BlackPad. Also, after having seen an iPad, and the PalmPad, i wouldn’t want to call it that, if i were in their shoes.
