The next major release of the Android OS will be ver 3.0 Gingerbread, and it is scheduled for a Q4 launch, but some juicy tidbits have emerged on a russian podcast.
The gingerbread is expected to have a completely revamped UI, the first since its introduction. We could be up for some 3D fun similar to the 3D Gallery App launched with Eclair (looks like Google is putting its BumpTop acquisition last year, to good use finally). They should also start supporting 1280 x 760 resolution for devices with screens larger than 4 inches (read tablets).
Google is also to be laying down some min hardware requirements, namely 3.5″ display, 1GHz processor, and 512 MB RAM. The lower end phones and tablets, that cannot meet these min hardware requirements will continue to run Android 2.1 / 2.2. This should also be the end of third party UI shells like the HTC Sense, Moto Blur, or the Samsung TouchWiz. With Android 3.0, there should not be a need for these anymore.
So is this going to the Android for tablets ? Will we see Android tablets with high resolution screens, and a fancy 3D UI, launching in time for the holiday season. Hope is such a good feeling.
